Language is key to communicating, and without communication it’s hard to see how anything could have developed in human society. Even in the case of human-to-human communication, the various languages we’ve invented seems to get in the way of effective communication. Headquartered in Lisbon, Unbabel has developed a “Translation-as-a-Service” platform that provides a programmatic way for applications and end users to get access to high-quality, on-demand language translations. The technology is in some respects an Augmented Intelligence solution in that the AI capabilities are used to make a first-pass translation that is then further refined by over 50,000 “Unbabeler” human assistants.
